I have a 21 year old son worked in professional theater from ages 3-18. At 17 he had a major crisis and we were dumbfounded. It was revealed in therapy that all the applause he received didn't go inside, so he was constantly chasing approval from the outside. Today he has transformed his life and is doing AMAZING things.
