I teach at an urban-ish school. Fortunately, we're located next to a park, so I take the kids out the first week of school to pick a favorite tree and spot. We regularly go out and watch the seasonal changes and name things we see (lamppost, oak tree, blossom) to increase their vocabulary. We also have a community vegetable garden. Too many kids think food comes from the store.

Thanks for your thoughtful article, Heather!
